Back to School: How to Boost Your Child's Immune Function

It's the time of year to really start thinking about how to boost your child's immune function. The kids are back in school and for many of us life has returned to the school schedule daily routine. That can often mean rushing around in the morning scrambling for homework and backpacks while Mom and Dad are also trying to get ready for work. Breakfast is often on the run and maybe not the most nutritious of meals. But children spending the greatest part of their day in close proximity with other children are being exposed to all types of germs which can lead to infections that will strip them of vital body nutrients. "Multiple, closely spaced, or severe infections are the most frequent cause of childhood malnutrition." (Beisel W. History of nutritional immunology: introduction and overview. Journal of Nutrition. March 1992; 122(3 Suppl):591-6.). So what can you do to naturally protect your children's health and how to boost your child's immune function?

How to Boost Immune Function
Nutrients that support immune function include Vitamin A, beta-carotene, zinc, iron, B-vitamins, amino acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids and nucleotides. All of these are abundant in microalgae. In fact studies of school children show a dramatic increase in school attendance due to a decrease in sick days for those that eat AFA blue-green algae. The carotenoids in AFA blue-green algae have also been shown to enhance immune function by giving protection to the thymus gland and antioxidant protection to white blood cells and other immune cells. Animal studies have found that those fed algae were the least likely to contract disease. (Jeffrey Bruno, Edible Microalgae) bluegreen algae that is the whole, complete algae,  provides essential fatty acids, proteins, complex sugars, vitamins, minerals, and essential amino acids. Supplementing your child's diet with blue-green algae is a natural way to support his or her immune function.

Acidophilus is another way to help boost immune function. We usually think of acidophilus as a support for digestive health, but since it produces B-vitamins and acidophilin it also aids in immune function support. Acidophilus also aids the body's ability to absorb nutrients.

How to Boost Immune Function on a Daily Basis
I know though that on a rushed morning trying to get everyone out the door to school and work, there often isn't time to dole out supplements from several bottles. The easy answer to how to boost immune function on those busy mornings is to hand out packets that contain two kinds of algae, an enzyme, an acidophilus capsule and a bifidus capsule.

How to Boost Immune Function to Combat Illness
We've all seen how "bugs" get passed around the schoolroom from child to child. If you know there is a bug going around your child's class, this immune system support supplement  can help give an extra boost to their immune function through supporting the production and activity of white blood cells. This supplement contains the active ingredient WGPtm beta glucan which has been scientifically shown to activate macrophages (type of white blood cell that is body's first line of defense). Studies at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University and John Hopkins University have all documented its potential as an immunity booster. For those times your child needs extra immune support to fight off the bug going around, you can supplement his or her diet with this supplement and give an extra 5-10 capsules of acidophilus (nature's antibiotic).

Supplementing your children's diet with these high quality supplements when illness is around can give them the extra edge for optimal immune function and learning time uninterrupted by sickness.

Cancer: Diet, Nutrition ... and Golf!

We've all heard about the "war on cancer" and the billions of dollars spent researching ways to prevent and cure cancer ... YET,

Did You Know that Cancer:
  • is the second leading cause of death in the US
  • every 30 seconds an American is diagnosed as having the disease
  • every 55 seconds another American dies from the disease?
Cancer is simply the body's cellular regeneration process gone wrong. Research now shows that at least 35% of the disease is related to nutritional factors. According to the Committee on Diet, Nutrition, and Cancer, "At present we have overwhelming evidence ... (that) none of the risk factors for cancer is ... more significant than diet and nutrition."

Foods rich in beta-carotene have been shown through various studies to help reduce the risks of cancer. Isolated sources or synthetic sources of beta-carotene however do not help reduce the risk. When making sure you get beta-carotene in your diet, supplements of only beta-carotene or in multivitamins are not useful in reducing the risk of cancer. Super Blue Green algae is not only a rich source of beta-carotene, but also has other ingredients that have cancer-preventative properties, including chlorophyll and the blue-green algae pigment called cryptophycin.

Studies have also shown that there is a potential benefit to eating algae before and after radiation for cancer patients. The beta-carotene from algae can help protect against the damage to cells by free radicals from radiation treatment and may help alleviate chemo side effects. In addition, eating algae can help slow the loss of white blood cells.

FYI: Recent research shows that participation in sports has a beneficial effect on health, especially for cancer survivors. The most popular sport? One study showed ... you got it, golf!

Natural Solutions for Circulation and Heart Function

Looking at natural solutions for circulation and heart function starts with researching the risk factors for heart problems. We have all heard about the obesity problem in the United States and about programs to start children learning to eat healthy diets to avoid becoming obese adults. This is due to so many of our diets having an over abundance of fats including saturated fat. Diets high in fat can lead to elevated levels of LDL cholesterol (yup, that's the bad one) and buildup of fatty deposits in arteries and contribute to the risk of heart problems.

Most heart associated deaths are caused by heart attacks and congestive heart failure. High blood pressure, obesity, irregular heartbeat and other conditions that overwork the heart can weaken it and lead to congestive heart failure.

Natural Solutions: The Facts
Public health expert, Albert Sanchez, Ph.D. did a study in 2000 with high school students examining obesity and heart disease risk factors and found that more than 80% had diets exceeding the recommended levels of total fat and saturated fat. More than a third of them had elevated LDL cholesterol levels and many had early build up of fatty deposits in the carotid artery. All of these are risk factors for heart disease and other health problems later in life.

A study from the University of California was conducted on children with inherited tendency towards high cholesterol. It was found that antioxidants seemed to improve the condition of the blood vessels by helping neutralize free radical molecules that prevent dilation of blood vessels. (Jeffrey Bruno, PhD, Edible Microalgae)

Natural Solutions for Risk of Heart Disease
Fruits and vegetables which are good sources of antioxidants can help lower the risk of heart disease. Microalgae, which is a rich source of antioxdants and offers a balance of essential fatty acids, has also been found to be a good natural solution to add to the diet. The beta carotene in algae also makes it a good natural solution to help reduce elevated LDL oxidation in those with diabetes. "Greenland Eskimos, whose traditional diet was high in coldwater fish that eat blue-green algae, had little cardiovascular disease." (Jeffrey Bruno, PhD, Edible Microalgae) according to a study by Smith D et al., Lipids. 1989; 24:70-5.

AFA algae is also high in polyunsaturated fatty acids and has a high percent of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 has been found to be severely lacking in the American diet and is helpful in supporting heart function and lowering blood pressure.

Supplementing the diet with coenzyme Q10 has been shown through scientific studies to have remarkable results on cardiovascular health and immunity. This  coenyme Q10 supplement offers this essential coenzyme as well as cold-pressed flaxseed oil, which is one of the richest sources of omega-3 and has omega-6 fatty acids, has carotenoids from red beta algae, contains a combination of antioxidants and bluegreen algae.

Natural Solutions: The Bottom Line
Natural solutions for keeping your heart strong and healthy include eating a heart healthy diet and adding superfoods rich in essential fatty acids and coenzyme Q10. Adding this coenzyme Q10 supplement to your diet is a simple natural solution to get all the supplementation to your diet that research has shown is essential to maintaining good heart health.

Natural Solutions for Immune Support

Our bodies are made with a built in immune system, but sometimes that system becomes overwhelmed and needs some help with natural solutions for immune support. Fortifying your immune system with natural solutions allows the body's defenses to better fight off harmful invaders and keep you healthy.

Natural Solutions: Blue Green Algae
Nutrients that support immune system function include Vitamin A, beta-carotene, zinc, iron, B vitamins, amino acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and nucleotides. Microalgae has an abundance of all of these and is therefore a good natural solution for immune system support. Studies have shown that children who eat blue-green algae miss less school due to sick days. Other studies of children diagnosed with zinc deficiency showed superior immune response from those given blue-green algae tablets. ("Edible Microalgae, Jeffrey J. Bruno, Ph.D.)

According to Karl Abrams, Chemistry professor, the carotenoids in AFA protect the thymus gland and offer antioxidant protection to immune cells. (Abrams, K. Algae to the Rescue. Logan House, 1996:71)

Natural Solutions: Beta Glucan
Another natural solution for immune support is the complex carbohydrate beta glucan. Scientists found in the 1960s that beta glucan has immune boosting properties. Studies reveal that WGP beta glucan is able to activate macrophages (type of white blood cell in body's defense system). Activating these macrophages can result in a stronger immune system.

How Betan Glucan Works
Beta glucan is a complex carbohydrate of glucose. It can found in yeast, bacteria, fungi and cereals like oats, barley and rye. Each type of beta glucan has a unique structure with glucose being linked together in different ways. This gives them distinctive physical properties. The most potent anti-infective beta glucan immunomodulator is derived from baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) beta glucan branched with beta 1,6 and beta 1,3 which enhances its ability to bind and stimulate macrophages. This is the type used in  this immune system support supplement making it another good natural solution for immune support.

If you are looking for natural solutions for immune system support, we have some recommendations for you. With bluegreen algae and this immune system support supplement, you can get the essential fatty acids, amino acids, vitamins and minerals plus WGP beta glucan that your body needs to help keep your immune system strong and your body healthy.

Natural Solutions to Allergies

If you are looking for natural solutions to allergies, algae may be the answer for you. Of course there are many different types of allergies ranging from food allergies to the seasonal pollen reaction type allergies. Turns out blue-green algae can offer natural solutions to many types of allergies.

Algae Offers Natural Solutions to Allergies and Asthma Relief
Jeffrey J. Bruno, Ph.D. concluded that "A daily dose of beta-carotene, from an algae extract, demonstrated a protective effect against exercise-induced asthma" and cites two studies that show adding blue-green algae to one's diet can contribute to a reduction of aphylactic and immune-type allergic reactions. ("Edible Microalgae, Jeffrey J. Bruno, Ph.D.) He also cites researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital findings that algal oils reduced blood levels of arachidonic acid in rats. Arachidonic acid creates molecules that trigger allergic reactions and that might contribute 1000 times more than histamine to asthmatic bronchial constriction. A study by the National Center for Health Statistics (1996) found that algae eaters had fewer allergies, skin problems and asthma.

Algae Offers Natural Solutions to Allergies to Foods
James Breneman, former chairman of the Food Allergy Committee of the American College of Allergists has stated that food allergies or intolerances are estimated to affect 60% of the population. But you are in luck if you are already an algae eater, as studies have shown that algae has been known to reduce allergic sensitivity in milk products. Another study reports findings that Spirulina ingested by mice enhances IgA antibody levels which may protect against allergic reactions to foods. Other studies have found that intolerances and allergies to food can be relieved by good digestion requiring a sufficient secretion of hydrochloric acid and pancreatic enzymes in to the stomach to process foods. AFA blue-green algae with its carotenes and chlorophyll have been shown to be beneficial in dealing with these type of food allergies and intolerances.

Natural Solutions to Allergies
Bluegreen alage that is the whole, complete algae, and provides essential fatty acids, proteins, complex sugars, vitamins, minerals, and essential amino acids including the beta-carotene Dr. Bruno refers to.

Algae powder has been found to be effective in coping with seasonal pollen allergies.  This powdered algae blend is a mix of blue-green alage, probiotics, enzymes, and antioxidant rich organic wheat sprouts making it a good choice of powder form algae.

This antioxidant supplement with wheat sprouts can help reduce histamine reactions associated with allergies and enzymes can help break down the pollen sheath thus reducing irritation of mucus membranes. Many people find allergy relief by taking these convenient packets which include two kinds of bluegreen algae as well as enzymes and probiotics.

So no matter what your allergy concerns are, we've got you covered with algae products offering natural solutions to allergies.

Skincare Routine: Keep it Simple

Do you have a skin care routine that's simple enough you can stick with it. A good skincare routine is especially important as we age and are exposed to more environmental toxins. A good skincare routine feeds your skin from the inside out and the outside in.

Skincare Routine: Inside Out
A good skincare routine includes a healthy diet, plenty of fresh water and sufficient exercise. Your skin is the largest organ of your body and 20-35% of your innate immune system cells are in the skin. Most people know that diet, water and exercise are good for the body in general, but don't really think about their skin in those terms. Feeding your skin good healthy food and getting the exercise your body needs to stay healthy, sets up a good routine for caring for your skin from the inside out.

Skincare Routine: Outside In
Check the labels on the skincare products you use. Those containing parabens, synthetics and petrochemicals are not what you want on your skin. Instead, a good skincare routine used products with nutrients like the vitamin E, organic blue-green algae, wholesome oils, and WGP Beta Glucan such as are found in this antioxidant lotion. These ingredients work together to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, encourage skin cell renewal, stimulate the skin's immune system and protect against free radical effects. Cleansing products and lotions such as these help you take care of your skin from the outside in.

Keeping it Simple
Of course no routine, no matter how healthy will work, if not done on a regular basis. That's where the "routine" part comes in. You have to establish a routine that you will find time to implement on a regular basis. I know we all get busy and tend to put things off. If you establish a simple basic routine however for skin care and set a time in your day to do it, you will be on your way to having healthy skin.

Keep It Simple With These 2 Steps:
1. Keep skin clean morning and evening with cleanser of your choice
2. Moisturize and get antioxidants with our favorite antioxidant lotion

That's it. Pretty basic right? Quick, easy and completely doable. This antioxidant lotion with WGP Beta Glucan offers a broad spectrum of antioxidants that neutralize the effects of free radicals. In addition, it contains a patented form of WGP Beta Glucan shown to support the immune function of the skin and offers protection as well as moisturizes the skin

Just add the 2 keep it simple steps into your morning and bedtime routines and your skin will be happy you did.
